Staff Pick Notes

Sugar cane made its financial impact in early 17th-century Barbados: the nation had no precious metals, and its tobacco, cotton, indigo, and fustic wood trade did not make ends meet for farmers. Sugar cane proved its worth by making fortunes for the few who snatched up all the available land. The first documented instance of rum production was in 1652, and the oldest continuous manufacturing of rum from Mt. Gay as early as 1663. Stylistically, Barbados rum is rich and fruit-forward. Here we have a versatile rum that is suitable for sipping neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails. Caramelized sugar, banana, and vanilla greet the senses upon first whiff. Other esters make themselves known when left to oxidize a bit in the glass. Rich flavors of milk, caramel, and nougat on the palate make this very approachable. Huge value!
