Tasting Notes

Our Barale Chinato is currently the best value available in the U.S. for this classic drink. Falling somewhere in between a vermouth and an amari, this style of chinato from Piemonte uses Barolo, the king of Italian wine, as its base. Once the wine has been made and aged, quinine is added along with traditional herbs, botanicals, and spices such as star anise, citrus, cardamom, and more. Excellent as an after dinner digestive as well as in cocktails and especially paired with chocolates.

Is there such a thing as love at first smell? I love all of Sergio Barale's wines--and if you haven't tried them run to the Piedmont aisle immediately--but this Chinato made my knees weak. Although this is similar to amari and vermouth, Sergio takes things up a notch. His base wine is Nebbiolo from the Castelero vineyard. Aging the wine for 10 years in demi-johns allows the grape to develop its spicy side. The wine for this bottling comes from the 2007 vintage and provides a beautiful, sturdy backdrop to the herbs and spices he adds. This Chinato is luscious and full-bodied yet bright with a tinge of bitter. Herbal notes play off spices: cinnamon, cloves, dark chocolate, pith of blood orange, and licorice. Everything in balance, perfectly harmonious. This is the perfect after-dinner sip with a bite of dark chocolate.

Several other Piedmontese grapes make striking and delicious wines: Pelaverga produces light-colored reds with distinctive...
