Letherbee has proven to be one of the most exciting new distilleries in the wave of craft outfits that continue to sweep the country. Fittingly so, coming from a city with such a long and deep connection to spirits and cocktails. The folks behind the brand are making their mark on a variety of traditional categories that not only stand-up impressively well on their own but are also damn good mixed into stellar drink creations. From the first aromas here there is no doubt this is fernet as we know and love it, with that clean menthol, minty hallmark that is backed up by some serious flavors provided by the generous amount of saffron, rhubarb, and myrrh gum. A great new addition.

Staff Pick Notes

I love everything that Letherbee does. They make great gin, a wonderful Besk, and delicious absinthe as well. I find however that their Fernet is the real feather in Letherbee's cap. I tasted it back to back with Fernet Branca and, with all due respect to the classic amaro, this completely reinvents and elevates the cateogory. Rich in texture, it has everything you want and like in a fernet: an invigorating mint and eucaplyptus backbone, notes of birch and cola, and hints of black coffee, dark chocolate and spices. What sets this apart from other fernets is how smooth, subtle, and balanced it is, with no one flavor overpowering the others. Its a real pleasure to enjoy on its own, tastes great Argentinean-style on the rocks with coke, or with a little splash of soda. Real tasty stuff from a premier Chicago distillery.
