This wine pays homage to a style of winemaking from the Middle Ages. It's unique in that it's mostly a blend of the aromatic white Fernão Pires grape (80%) with some added color from the red Trincadeira. Not quite a red so we're calling this a rosé all the while nodding to history.

I love any wine that straddles the line between light red and dark rosé, and I usually have to pay a lot more for one that's this good. Exactly as fresh and juicy as I'd hoped, it has surprising texture and depth and stays dry. Medieval de Ourém, as you might guess from the name, is a pretty old style of wine, documented back to the 1100s when it was made by Cistercian monks. It's an unusual co-fermentation of 80% Fernao Pires white with a smaller addition of the inky, red Trincadeira grape, both indigenous to the region. The resulting wine is aged in chestnut barrels, and Montalto's version is made with native yeasts and a certified organic vineyard. The locals down bottles of this stuff with salt cod and hard cheeses, and it will drink amazingly with any salty or oily snacks and grilled foods, as well as summer salads with fruit.
