The product that started the whole project. Malört is the Swedish word for wormwood and also the name of this traditional drink. Interestingly enough, it has strong roots in Chicago and that is exactly where the folks at Letherbee have started their craft distillery, and this excellent malört is their first product. To create it, a neutral grain spirit is infused with wormwood and natural sugar. The nose is driven by notes of dill, brine, and bitter herbs, while the sweetness also clearly comes through. The palate has a great balance of the bitter and sweet. The most common way to serve is a chilled shot right out of the freezer as an apéritif, but this is also the perfect stand-alone after dinner digestif.

What is Besk, you ask? Why, it is Sweden's infamous, fragrant wormwood liqueur, of course! It's akin to absinthe and meant to be drunk cold and neat. It will also add an aromatic jolt to any gin-based cocktail if you want to go there. The lovely spices and incense-like musk will play beautifully against a botanical gin. Anise, geranium leaves, and white pepper are the dominant tasting notes here, but it's glittering with forest root flavors. The texture is rich enough to linger over and savor and it's bottled at 100 proof, so a little goes a long way.
