From a rare site planted to Nebbiolo in 1994. The soil is gravel-based and the site is cool and breezy allowing for an ideal growing season. The Pip is an early barrel selection from the Bricco Buon Natale Nebbiolo bottling from the Clendenen winery. This was aged for 4 years in 500 L barrels.

Staff Pick Notes

Jim Clendenen, winemaker extraordinaire and owner of Au Bon Climat, is sadly no longer with us. A charismatic world traveler inspired by many trips to Burgundy, he went against the prevailing California wine market trends of the 80s and 90s to create beautifully restrained Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a strong sense of place. In 2000, he started the Clendenen Family imprint to release wines made from varietals less commonly grown in the US, including this gorgeous 2017 Nebbiolo. Young, fresh, vibrant, and complex, it has little to do with Barolo, but everything to do with outstanding California winemaking. Black cherries, raspberries, dried herbs, lithe tannins, great acid, and more depth and richness than the beautiful light ruby color would suggest. One of his final releases before his passing, but up there with his best. RIP Jim.
