Staff Pick Notes

Like many of us, I love Sassicaia. But at its price, it has reserved its place rightly at the super premium level of Italian wines. It is an incredible wine that is renowned for its aging potential, which shows optimally 10-30 years after bottling. That is a long time to reach its full potential! If only there was a wine from the same estate that was priced more modestly with an earlier drinkability window. This is where Guidalberto saves the day! Launched with the 2000 vintage, Tenuta San Guido created this wine to offer an earlier drinking window (within its first 3-10 years) and to showcase the potential of their Merlot (an often misunderstood grape) blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine offers a wonderfully smooth texture with a complex mix of black forest fruits, herbs, and spices combined with a very long finish.

Merlot

The next time you hear someone say they never touch Merlot, tell them that it's too bad, because you were just about to open a few bottles of Château Pétrus and Le Pin, and you have no one to share them with. Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...

Tuscany

When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is common to most great Tuscan reds (Vernaccia is the only white wine made here). Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most complex expressions of Sangiovese, has the best aging potential. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows the softer side of the grape, containing up to 20% of other varieties. Young Chianti often smells of fresh fruit and herbs, while Chianti Classico Riserva can be dark and brooding. The term “Super Tuscans”...
