Moschofilero, "Hoof & Lur", Troupis Winery - 2024

750 mL
Item # 44511

Moschofilero is a specialty of Troupis Winery and the family has been growing it here in the Peloponnese since the '70s. This is a very low intervention style, with wild yeast, skin contact, and it is unfined and unfiltered. Aromatic and fresh, but with a slightly tannic structure, this wine goes perfectly with seafood, and meze.

Production Methods

Natural

Wine made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes with minimal intervention avoiding the use of chemicals, additives and technology.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

It’s been a long, strange, winter. Maybe it’s too early for rosé, but I was in the mood for something similar, so with summer on my mind, I reached for this. Moschofilero is a pink-skinned, aromatic grape variety grown on Greece's Peloponnese peninsula. It’s tart and juicy, with notes of rhubarb, cherry, and dried orange that grow more expressive with time in the glass. The Troupis family has a long history of work in agronomy, where vines, fruit trees, and flowers have been grown and sold from their nursery in Mantinia. As with other traditional Greek families who make wine for their own table, their efforts naturally grew into the desire to share their passion with others. If you’re looking to get into Greek wines, or looking for an alternative to the same old rosés, give this one a shot, and think of summer.
