In 2004, in San Francisco, Tracey Rogers and Jared Brandt established one of America’s first natural urban wineries. Throughout the years, Donkey and Goat has adhered to the principles of natural wine. This includes adding nothing (except for minuscule amounts of sulfur), organic farming, and hand picking. 2021 was unfortunate for many California vineyards. Luckily, a batch of Pinot Noir became available from The Central Coast’s Enz Vineyard. 40-year-old vines planted at 1100 ft elevation on sandy granite, limestone, and dolomite. Rich dark berry fruit, dried black tea, and a touch of smoke are packed into each mouthful. Grippy, granular tannins and a brisk acidity give the wine structure for drinking years later. A beautiful wine to pair with a truffled sheep cheese.

Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
