From spirit distilled in the autumn of 2012, aged for a full 11yrs and bottled in the summer of 2024 at a natural cask strength, this embodies about all the great attributes you could hope for from an American Rye. Brimming over with notes of molasses, dark chocolate, lemon poppy seed cake, ginger tea, peanut butter, cinnamon, cedar and so much more.

Enter Old Overholt, America’s oldest continuously operating whiskey brand, who has just released a cask-strength rye that may be up to the task. Starting in 2020, Beam Suntory began reviving Old Overholt by releasing premium products with notable age statements. This most recent edition, aged for 11 years before release in 2024, is a return to form. It’s a touch sweeter than most ryes due to inclusion of 20% “soft” barley, so bourbon drinkers will find something to love right away with notes of chocolate, toffee, and birthday cake. Once the sweeter notes fade, there’s an underlying spiciness, with notes of cinnamon, dill, and wintergreen, for serious rye drinkers. Rest easy, America.
