Vino Blanco "Carrizal", Louis Antoine Luyt - 2022

1 L
Item # 52282

An orange wine. Louis-Antoine Luyt moved to Chile in 2006 and unexpectedly helped helm a revolution of terroir-driven winemaking. These are in a league of their own, nothing to do with the old school of winemaking. A white blend of Chasselas, Sémillon, Torontell and Moscato and coming from 100-200 year old bush vines in the Carrizal sub region.

Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Louis Antoine Luyt makes wines that express uniqueness and originality. I bet you 5 dollars that you haven't tried wine like this Carrizal Blanco. At first sip I noted tangerine flavors and a bit of a grainy texture. It recalled the not fully dissolved Tang drink of my good old days. It really has an accessible soft drink-like appeal. Add notes of nutmeg, lychee, passion fruit, and sour limes. It's the type of wine that you will always want more of. Luyt works with Ernesto Soto’s organically farmed vineyards as the source. The must sees 3 weeks of skin maceration in open wooden tanks. Then bottled with a light filtration and minimal SO2 added. A natural wine that is naturally good.

More About This Wine

Chile

Chilean winemakers are known for opening their arms to forgotten European grape varieties, nursing them back to health, and then releasing them back to the rest of the world - and we can’t thank them enough for it. Chile’s friendly, delicious Carmenères are the best example, but Chile is generally one of the most consistent sources of delicious, ready-to-drink, approachable wines. Cabernet Sauvignons from Chile are just as crowd-pleasing as the Carmenères, and keep an eye out for velvety,...

Chasselas

A white grape grown all over the world, including Alsace, the Loire, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. The best Chasselas wines, however, are produced in Switzerland, where the grape is called Fendant and is the most widely planted variety in the country. When made well, Chasselas is soft, welcoming and easy to drink.

Blanco

White tequila, an official type (tipo) for tequila bottled fresh from the still, or allowed to rest in stainless steel tanks for up to sixty days before bottling. It is never aged in wooden barrels. Also known as plata, plato, and silver tequila. Usually the most robust, strong-flavoured of the tequila types.
