Sometimes the newest frontiers of wine are some of the oldest. I'm very excited to be carrying several bottles representing China's nascent natural wine scene, chief among them this field blend from Ian Dai. Dai is known as the "big brother" of natural wine in China, though he prefers call it "slow" winemaking. Since 2017, the former somm and educator has been making minimal intervention wines in several of China's winemaking regions under the label Xiao Pu, or "small garden". "The Gathering" is Dai's attempt to capture the terroir of arid Ningxia, perhaps China's best known wine region. It is a lighter, elegant red/white field blend that is led by Syrah, with aromas of dry spices, lightly smoked meat, and dense, tart red fruit. Lovely smooth tannins create a scrumptious, well balanced drinking experience for any occasion.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

Black Muscat

Black Muscat and Muscat Hamburg are the same grape. It yields light red wines in eastern Europe and even in China, but it's far more common as a table grape than as wine.

During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world.
