Chenin Vieilles Vignes, Garo'Vin - 2022

750 mL
Item # 53645

An older vines, unusual Chenin Blanc with lower alcohol from vines planted in a mix of pink schist and quartz-based soils around the Layon river. Fermented in older oak barrels, this dry wine boasts honey and mineral on the palate, and is a bit funky. Cédric Garreau makes tiny amounts of exceptional wines in the Anjou region. Since his first vintage, in 2010, his wines have been embraced by locals and natural-wine drinkers around the world.

Staff Pick Notes

Winemaker Cédric Garreau from Garo'Vin, located in the commune of Beaulieu-sur-Layon within the Loire Valley, has made the most unique Chenin Blanc that I've tried to date. Yes, there are those characteristic notes of honey, peach, and green apple, but there are other notes present at the first sniff that are not characteristic: miso and sesame! This wine starts off on the savory side and then glides into familiar territory and I am more than pleased with where it starts and ends! It's also worth noting that Cédric has made a Chenin Blanc that is unfined, unfiltered, and has no added sulfur. I also believe that this would be a perfect wine to buy as the weather gets warmer, especially because of the refreshing level of acidity and lighter weight on the palate!

More About This Wine

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Anjou

At the far western end of the Loire Valley lies the town of Angers, for which the region of Anjou is named. The wines of this region enjoyed great fame throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, when wine production was dominated by the white varietals Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Then, when phylloxera wiped out most of these plantings, the area was replanted with a large proportion of Cabernet Franc, as well as smaller plots of Grolleau, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamay. Today, Anjou is most famous...

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
