Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

En Vrac is a blend of 5 typical Alsatian varietals. Much of its character comes from the percentage of Muscat that underwent 2 weeks of skin maceration. It shows profound aromatics of yellow flowers, peaches, and baking spice which is rare in cool climate, high elevation wines. Riesling gives it a brisk backbone of acidity. Gerwurztraminer adds to the floral, fruity bouquet and Sylvaner and Auxerrois to the freshness. There is a touch of grippy tannins and graininess on the palate. All these traits are All fruit is farmed organically by the Bohns on various small plots on the 9 hectare estate. At its price, it is one of the better bang for your buck in the store.

More About This Wine

Alsace

Located on the eastern border of France, on the west bank of the Upper Rhine, adjacent to Germany and Switzerland, Alsace represents the intersection of two wholly different wine cultures that have given birth to a third. Once part of the Holy Roman Empire, Alsace was gradually put under French sovereignty during the 17th Century and eventually made one of the provinces of France. Yet, as evidenced by the persistece of a dialect of Upper German in the region even today, Alsace's ties to Germany...

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...

Auxerrois

Auxerrois is the name of a low-acid white grape widely planted in Alsace, as well as in Germany and Luxembourg. It is also the name used for the black Malbec grape in Cahors, where it is the principal wine grape. The list goes on: Pinot Gris is known as "Auxerrois Gris" in Alsace, and at one time Chardonnay was called "Auxerrois Blanc" in the Moselle region (though this last term fell into disuse after Chardonnay's huge boom in popularity). Alsatian Auxerrois is used in Crémant d'Alsace, and in...

Gewürztraminer

You won't likely forget your first "Gewürz," as they're some of the most distinctive and recognizable wines in the world. They are usually heavily perfumed with rich lychee and rose aromas. The variety is cultivated all over the world, but the best examples tend to come from Alsace: these are full-bodied wines with a golden color. The pink-skinned Gewürztraminer does best in cooler climates, which allow the grapes to develop good balancing acidity. This is a necessary attribute of any...
