Spain’s Famed Plains: Collecting La Rioja

There is, perhaps, no Spanish winemaking region more prominent than La Rioja. A province in the north, La Rioja is home to the country’s most well-known wines, many of which have stood the test of time. This can be a collector’s region, and most of the wines hailing from La Rioja fall into four distinct categories: Joven, Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. The latter three are highly regulated due to the country’s wine laws and must be aged according to standards set by the Denominación de Origen (D.O.), the Spanish regulatory classification system for wines. For these three types of wines, two-, three-, and five-year minimums of oak aging are required, followed by subsequent bottle aging. The Joven Riojas, on the other hand, are youthful wines, aged for only a short time—under a year—before bottling. Typically bottled unoaked or slightly oaked and designed for quaffing, the Jovens are made in an easy-drinking style, perfect for taking home and opening immediately over dinner. Though wines from La Rioja are primarily red, whites and rosés also exist—but don’t disregard them as unworthy of your vintage attention: many are fit for aging. We’ve chosen a mixed lot of these wines, including back vintages of some outstanding producers that are worth adding to your collection.
