Premier Pas means "first step" in French and this was indeed the first wine produced by a talented husband-and-wife team after they'd moved to Corbières in the Languedoc-Roussillon. A natural, completely organic wine with no sulfites added, this shows ripe blackberry fruit with underlying herbal layers and cocoa notes. It's medium-bodied and great for any time of year. A blend of mostly Carignan and some Grenache Noir fermented in whole clusters.

Great Value alert! This is a wine that severely over delivers. If you want to see what complexity can look like in an affordable price point "Premiers Pas" is it. This is a wine that essentially defies what I assume wines from Corbieres should taste like. While the region is generally filed with big rich reds, this is a wine that takes a more subtle, yet still flavorful stance. Packed with notes of blueberries, black berries, and a bit of tart black cherries, this wine has freshness and liveliness. There is also some slight earthiness on the finish that makes me want a board of salty meats and fruit preserves. Bottled unfined unfiltered and coming from a Demeter certified winery this wine will also please the natty wine crowd.

Carignan

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends.
