Donnas Rouge, Vallée d'Aoste - 2019

Item # 15911 750mL

This is a true Alpine wine that sings of its place of origin. These steep hills and mountains are ideal for grazing herds, and also for the production of light-bodied red wines. A blend of Nebbiolo and Freisa, this bottle gives delicious brambly notes on the nose, as well as dark, fleshy blackberries and cherries. Imagine the elegance of a Barbaresco combined with the airiness of a Pinot Noir. The tannins are very approachable and the wine makes a perfect accompaniment to many of the local cheeses from Vallée d'Aoste.

Staff Pick Notes

Donnas is in the easternmost region of the Valle D'Aosta. Nestled in the Alps of northwestern Italy, the thin, rocky soils are based largely on granite and schist. By absorbing warmth during sunny days, the soils are able to insulate vines in the much cooler evenings. The steep, terraced slopes make for good solar retention as well as ease in maintenance and picking. This Cooperative-based winery makes a sumptuous, elegant and perfumed Nebbiolo blend. Well-priced and fun to drink, this bottle offers an incredible, aromatic intensity that higher elevation Nebbiolo can provide. Bright red cherry and raspberry fruit, rose, alpine herbs, cola and crushed rock are just some of the aromas, while the non-agressive tannins and bright freshness lend a helping hand to your next truffle pasta with butter.

Glossary

Freisa

The Freisa grape produces delicious red wines in a variety of styles - both still and sparkling, dry and sweet. In each of its many iterations, Freisa remains a very fruit-driven, juicy variety; the wines make excellent matches with light appetizers.
