Grauer Burgunder Kabinett, Weinhof Scheu - 2011

Item # 22338 750mL

Just at the border near Alsace and established in the mid-sixties, this father-and-son team are creating wines ranging from dry to off-dry to sweet dessert wines. This Pinot Gris is done in a true off-dry style with fresh peaches on the nose, and it packs nice minerality and crisp acidity. A great selection for Asian salads and sauces.

Staff Pick Notes

I love stumbling across pleasant little anomalies like this one. Situated in Schweigen-Rechtenbach, at the extreme southern end of Germany’s Pfalz--practically in Alsace--Weinhof Scheu is taking Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Grigio/Gris) to uncharted heights for a modest price. And yet, despite the fact that Scheu’s vineyards are only 50 miles or so north of Strasbourg and the Bas-Rhin of Alsace, this wine is spiritually much closer to Friuli or Slovenia. A beautiful light coppery color recalls a Pinot Grigio ramato, and I would be surprised if this wine didn’t have a bit of skin contact. It’s dense, spicy, and wonderfully savory and long. What a great find.

About the Producer

Pfalz, Germany Klaus Scheu took control of the estate from his father, Günter, who retired in 1994. Theirs is a weinhof without borders, as it sits so close to the France (Alsace), that the vines nearly cross back and forth. Klaus, like his father, maps this not by geographic boundary, but by micro-climate and soils complexity, creating a unique home for each varietal and clone. His philosophy:...

Germany

German wines are some of the most jubilantly fruity bottles in the world. The country's Rieslings have been prized worldwide for centuries, yet they have never quite caught on in the U.S.: this no doubt due to Germany’s arcane system of wine classification. The most useful words to know on German wine labels are “Kabinett,” which indicates an outstanding everyday wine, and “trocken,” which means “dry.” As far as dessert wines go, a half-bottle of German Eiswein is so potent that you'll be able...

Pinot Gris

Pinot Grigio is an Italian synonym for the French Pinot Gris variety, but many more people have had Pinot Grigio than a Pinot Gris. At its most basic level, the grape produces varietals that are smooth and easy to drink, and perfect with a huge range of dishes that just beg to be paired with a fresh white wine. There is an entire spectrum of Pinot Gris/Grigio, however, the best of them being subtly aromatic and deeply colored, with formidable structures. Most of Italy's Pinot Grigio is grown in...
