This brilliant white from the legendary Paolo Bea estate is made from a regional version of Trebbiano called "Spoletino." The wine spends four years on the lees, giving it a golden hue and fleshy complexity. Dry, full-bodied, and with striking minerality, here the vines are trained high off the ground, a technique that was meant to leave room to plant other crops underneath. The wine takes his name from the Italian work for tree, "albero."

This burnt orange beauty is the Cadillac of wines made in the skin contact style. The color of the juice when I poured it was the first unexpected surprise the wine bestowed upon the evening. I must admit I bought this bottle for the grape variety - Trebbiano Spoletino. This clone of Trebbiano is native to Umbria and offers more weight & complexity than some of its hardworking and ubiquitous relatives. After crushing the fruit the juice & skins remain in contact for three weeks, providing its amazing hue. To be sure, this wine is complex, but never too abrasive or complicated. Flavors and scents range from all the major categories of Sherry, bitter almond, dried orange peel & under-ripened olives to gentle spices reminiscent of Amaro and soft, cider-like tannins on the finish. Put this high on your "to drink" list!
