Umbria Bianco "Arboreus," Paolo Bea - 2016

750 mL
Item # 22350

This brilliant white from the legendary Paolo Bea estate is made from a regional version of Trebbiano called "Spoletino." The wine spends four years on the lees, giving it a golden hue and fleshy complexity. Dry, full-bodied, and with striking minerality, here the vines are trained high off the ground, a technique that was meant to leave room to plant other crops underneath. The wine takes his name from the Italian work for tree, "albero."

Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Paolo Bea ia a natural wine icon. He began making natural wine in the early 70’s, when wine production trended towards the industrial. He has always tended to his vines organically. His estate grows olives and produce, as biodiversity makes healthier soils. He’s always hand harvested, never added yeast or sulfur to the wines, and avoids filtration. The Arboreus is made from Trebbiano grown on a small parcel of the estate of limestone clay soils. Skin maceration takes place for 3 weeks. It undergoes full malo and is aged in tank for 2 years. The bottle I enjoyed has aged in bottle for another 8 years. It still possesses a tannic structure that is lifted by a zippy acidity. The color is a deep copper. It smells and tastes of dried leaves, cinnamon, mint, and overripe apples. If you love orange wine this is a benchmark bottle

This tiny estate is the classic Italian fattoria, producing wine, raising farm animals for trade and home consumption and working the land to produce olives, fruits and vegetables. To this day, the Bea family raises and produces...

Umbria

This rugged inland province is famous not only for its wines but also the fine Umbrian truffles that are harvested here each year. Umbrian winemakers have worked tirelessly for the preservation of one of Italy’s least-known noble grapes, Sagrantino. Responsible for the eponymous Sagrantino di Montefalco as well as being a component of Rosso di Montefalco, Sagrantino has the power and structure of the biggest wines in Italy, yet still shows opulent fruit redolent of mixed wild berries. The Rosso...
