Cornas, Philippe Pacalet - 2020

Item # 23100 750mL

Philippe Pacalet’s interest in Syrah stems back to the 1980’s when he visited the Rhône Valley while engaged in civil service, discovering the wines and befriending several winemakers. Grapes are sourced from an acre of 25-year-old bush vines in the granite hills of the Massif Central, of which the parcel is located in Saint Pierre. The granite soil is eroded on the surface in the form of sand and the grapes receive south-southeast exposure on the higher part of the slope.

Staff Pick Notes

I really shouldn’t be telling you about this bottle. This is one of those wines selfish professionals (AKA me!) keep under our hats while the sheeple chase after lime-lit labels. But how can I make sure you drink better wines and still keep this a secret? This is powerful, and sometimes such grandiose wines can seem like they’re screaming and overwhelm your senses. After all, power is nothing without control. Phillipe Pacalet has made a Syrah that sings of its best virtues without fumbling on any of the high notes: Violets, briny olives, leather, and salted raspberries. Pour a glass and put on “Che Gelida Manina” from La Bohème and you’ll find this wine is matched only by the crescendo at the end.

Glossary

Rhône

Prestige in the north, value in the south: that’s the quick version of the Rhône story. Southern village appellations produce a dizzying stylistic range of delicious wines, while the prices for northern “trophy” bottles can be dizzyingly high. If you like smoky, leathery, earthy, macho red wines, however, the wines of the northern Rhône are well worth it. Prestigious northern Rhône appellations include Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and St.-Joseph. In the southern Rhône, look to the village...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
