Le Verre des Poètes, Nathalie and Emile Heredia - NV

Item # 23552 750mL

100% Pineau d'Aunis from 147 year old, ungrafted vines. The sanguine nose brims with red peppercorns and black plums, with hints of violets, dried herbs, and minerals. An amazing food wine, especially with earthy foods - mushrooms, cassoulet, charcuterie - but it has also been known to go very well with a nice hearty salad.

Staff Pick Notes

Pineau d'Aunis has become one of the objects of wine geek affection and winemaker Emile Hérédia played a very instrumental role in this. Having stumbled upon some pre-phylloxera vines averaging 55 years of age (some as old as 100 years), he started his wine making career in 1999 with as little intervention as possible. This is anything but reticent in the glass and boast of dried orange and a salt and pepper note that can frequently be found in Loire reds. There is a fresh herbal quality on the palate and a pleasantly bitter note reminiscent of tree bark as well. This would work well with simply prepared lighter fare along the lines of like roast chicken, but is charming on its own as an aperitif.

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
