Côte-Rôtie "Ampodium," Rostaing - 2016

Item # 26790 750mL

Rostaing is one of the Northern Rhône's most respected producers, with wines of unique purity of fruit and soil. Redolent of white pepper and stones, this Syrah gives floral ripe purple berries and demonstrates a classic acidity that will age well. Fresh tannins on the finish complete the picture. Rostaing is a classicist - he despises the over-extracted wines of some of his neighbors. He uses 15-25% new wood on his Côte-Rôties, but detests obviously oaky wines.

Staff Pick Notes

In one of my alternative, lottery-winning lives, I have a Côte-Rotie problem. My cellar (also part of this imaginary life) is brimming with bottles from La Landonne, the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, the name Rostaing prominent among the labels. Founded by René Rostaing in 1971 and now in the hands of his son, Pierre, this is one of the most revered estates of Côte Rotie.Ampodium is their introductory wine and is made from a blend of grapes from several different vineyards. It opens with delicate cherry and red current aromas, but really comes alive on the palate. There's a dense dark core of red and black fruits, black pepper, olives, and tobacco but is lifted with lovely floral notes, lithe tannins and fresh acidity. Pair with lamb or hearty stews, and don't forget the lottery ticket.

Rhône

Prestige in the north, value in the south: that’s the quick version of the Rhône story. Southern village appellations produce a dizzying stylistic range of delicious wines, while the prices for northern “trophy” bottles can be dizzyingly high. If you like smoky, leathery, earthy, macho red wines, however, the wines of the northern Rhône are well worth it. Prestigious northern Rhône appellations include Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and St.-Joseph. In the southern Rhône, look to the village...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
