Half-Bottle of Kopke 10 Yr. White Port

Item # 26809 375mL

An effusive unstoppable nose of toffee enriched spices balanced with a backbone of ripe pear comes across effortlessly on this unique, aged White Port. It is slightly less sweet than a Tawny. From infinitely small production and very old vines (up to 150 yrs old), the finish of salted caramel goes on and on. The color has turned a ruddy amber, due to gentle oxyiation and aging in large oak barrels. Aged White Port is usually served with cheeses, after dinner and goes well with nut-based desserts that are not too sweet. This traditional fortified wine was made with a field blend of unique indigenous grapes including Viozinho, Malvazia Fina, Fernão Pires (known as Maria Gomes in other regions), Codega, Gouveio, Arinto and Rabigato.

What is a white port? Okay: Port is a wine produced in the Duoro region of Portugal, which is then fortified with a neutral grape spirit that stops fermentation, leaving various styles of Ports at different levels of sweetness. Port is most often produced using red grapes; white Port is simply made from white grapes. This wonderful 10-year-old white Port was made using the Arinto grape variety commonly used in Vinho Verde. This wine is not too sweet and makes a wonderful digestif served on ice. It is also the perfect accompaniment to cheese, chutney, and roasted walnuts. My wife and I just this weekend devoured a bottle along with a cheddar, some Stilton, and apple-and-walnut chutney. The divine nose of nutty, slightly salty caramel still lingers with me even now a day later as I write this. It was that flipping tasty. Cheers, Stephen

Douro wines tend to be a bit fuller and fleshier than their Dão counterparts, which are generally lighter and higher in acidity. Reds from both regions are dense, rustic, and well-balanced. They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most famous white wine. Literally translated as "green wine," it...
