Donkey and Goat "Gadabout" White Blend - 2020

750 mL
Item # 28395

The wine is aptly named: Gadabout meaning a pleasure seeker or a social butterfly. This wine is so charming with it's depth of golden fruit flavors, luscious mouthfeel and a touch of tannin. Another superb wine from the Donkey and Goat Winery. This wine sees about 2 days of skin contact.

Production Methods

Natural

Wine made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes with minimal intervention avoiding the use of chemicals, additives and technology.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Since a specific definition doesn’t exist, questions abound when it comes to the category of natural wines. I like to use the term low intervention, since winemaking isn’t a recipe, but more often a combo of luck, magic, and skills based on what each vintage dictates. The Donkey & Goat philosophy, balanced by a healthy dose of “never say never” encompasses the best practices of multiple farming and winemaking philosophies. Not bound by dogma, but guided by a "less is more" ethos, Jared and Tracey Brandt create wines unique to the California scene. The Gadabout is an unfiltered wine with notes of apple skins and spiced pears, quite textured on the palate with balanced acidity and alcohol. I liked it better on day two of being opened, so decanting this natural beauty certainly won't hurt.

About the Producer

A Donkey & Goat is a wife and husband owned and operated winery located in Berkeley California. Tracey and Jared Brandt, who own neither donkey nor goat, are the couple behind these naturally made wines, aim to emphasize their distinctive, soulful qualities, which truly represent the earth from which the vines are grown. They do not care about consistency; they care about character. That said,...

More About This Wine

Grenache

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both characterized by significant percentages of Grenache, while in Tavel and Lirac the grape is used to make...

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
