Spätburgunder, Christmann - 2018

Item # 30991 750mL

The new generation of the Christmann estate has a soft spot for Pinot Noir - they make many - and there's great reason this variety thrives in the area as this is the one spot where you find limestone veins which go hand-in-hand with the grape.

Staff Pick Notes

Spatburgunder is just German Pinot Noir. I can't help you on pronunciation, but don't let it intimidate you. And Christmann's Pinot is wonderful. Supple red fruit, underbrush, and a little savory mushroom character are softened with a touch of chocolate and oak spice. This is a higher acid style, owing to the cool German climate, so I recommend it with food. I really recommend it with a mushroom/rosemary pizza, and you could do Japanese BBQ as well. This is a sort of sentimental wine for me. An earlier vintage was the first time, way back as a tender 22yr old, when I took a chance on an unfamiliar wine from an distant, unfamiliar place, and it really opened wine up for me. I'm happy to report that every vintage since has been just as enlightening, and yummy.

Pinot Noir

The Burgundy region of northeastern France is the historic home of the Pinot Noir grape, and is the source of the world’s greatest examples. Here one finds renditions of Pinot Noir that deliver power with finesse and grace, wines that have unimaginable depth of flavor, yet are perfectly balanced and ephemeral in the mouth - in short, wines that deliver all that Pinot Noir has to offer. Terroir, the concept that wines from a specific region have unique and identifiable traits, is intricately...

Germany

German wines are some of the most jubilantly fruity bottles in the world. The country's Rieslings have been prized worldwide for centuries, yet they have never quite caught on in the U.S.: this no doubt due to Germany’s arcane system of wine classification. The most useful words to know on German wine labels are “Kabinett,” which indicates an outstanding everyday wine, and “trocken,” which means “dry.” As far as dessert wines go, a half-bottle of German Eiswein is so potent that you'll be able...
