When looking for good value in super serious, steaky red wines, Portugal is one of my favorite sleeper regions. Hailing from the Lisboa region just outside the capital city, the Cepa Pura Aragonez is a massive, robust wine, packed with firm tannins, tart cherries, and tons of aromatics that are reminiscent of Langhe Nebbiolos (my other sweetheart value region). The finish is about ten minutes long, leaving behind chalky minerality, the driest mouth feel, and maybe a whiff of wilted roses, if you're into that kind of thing. Pair this with the meatiest of meats: medium rare burgers, well-marbled steaks, wild boar, or kangaroo.
