Tasting Notes

The wine comes from the high-altitude wine region east of Madrid where Victor de la Serna's own wine operation Finca Sandoval is based. The young winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce is passionate to produce wines from native varieties. This is his white from Albillo grape from cool-sited vineyards. Very elegant and refined with green apple, stone fruits, green tea, chamomile, spices, and limestony minerality. Multi-layered with a great length.

Staff Pick Notes

A delicious & refreshing wine from the brilliant young winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce. A passionate guardian of native grape varieties, it's people like him who ensure that ancient, humble, tasty, little-known grapes are not driven extinct by international juggernauts like Chardonnay and Sauv Blanc. Ponce's Reto Manchuela 2015 is a masterpiece of the Albillo grape, showing peach, apricot, melon, daffodils, & popcorn on the nose. It has a rich round mouthfeel that is lightened with a hint of spritz on the tongue & a refreshing mineral undercurrent. This wine gets more & more intriguing as the bottle disappears. It would be gorgeous with hard spanish cheeses, a rich dish of fish & olives, lox & bagels, or even apple cinnamon pancakes. Give Albillo a chance!
