Staff Pick Notes

New splashy label, same old Kuentz-Bas. A kitchen sink blend of Auxerrois, Sylvaner, Riesling, Muscat, and Gewürztraminer, this wine is like a prog-rock supergroup reuniting for a greatest hits tour but without hollow promises to retire at the conclusion. And who would want them to, anyway? Kuentz-Bas, along with peers Trimbach and Zind Humbrecht, has been a leading light in Alsace in making rich, dense, opulent, and completely heady wines for generations. This bottle is a perfect entry-level example of the region’s hallmark style, with very ripe fruit taking the lead and backed up by boisterous floral aromas and enough acidity to contain a touch of some residual sugar. But where it starts to veer into sweetness, it's balanced by pithy citrus and lychee, and a lightly bitter quality on the finish.

The list goes on: Pinot Gris is known as "Auxerrois Gris" in Alsace, and at one time Chardonnay was called "Auxerrois Blanc" in the Moselle region (though this last term fell into disuse after Chardonnay's huge boom in popularity). Alsatian Auxerrois is used in Crémant d'Alsace, and in...
