Lagrein Riserva, Nusserhof - 2018

Item # 36074 750mL

Heinrich Nusserhof's Riserva preserves the full-bodied, fresh, aromatic berry character of the Lagrein grape. Eschewing barrique, the wine is bottled a year after harvest then aged in bottle before release. Best served at cellar temperature and benefits from decanting.

Staff Pick Notes

Sometimes certain locations can stay the same while the world around them changes radically. This is very much the case for Nusserhof's Lagrein Reserva wines. What was once a pastoral landscape has turned into a full on urban area, as Bolzano's industrial features creep ever closer. A lot can change in the 400 years that this property has been in the Mayr family. This history and intimacy with the parcel makes for an extremely elegant Lagrein that is entirely unlike the more simple iterations of the grape. This is finely structured, full of aging dark fruits such as plum, coffee, dried savory herbs, and earthy undertones. The fine tannic structure and acidity contribute to the incredible ageability. This is a superb wine that is one of the gems of this Austro-Italian region.

The region is most famous for its...

Situated on the historic boundary between Italy and Austria, the two autonomous regions were returned to Italy after World War I (hence why they are often lumped together). Alto-Adige retains great pride in its Germanic heritage, evidenced by the dual language bottle labels appearing in the region. Alto-Adige is most...
