With Laphroaig 10 yr, you have to take sides; there's no middle ground here, no room for indecision. Its oil-textured, peat-smoked profile is redolent of an ambivalent detective from a 30's noir film. There might be greater depth, complexity, or finesse in some of their neighbor's bottlings, but few have the sheer force of personality. Truly a Scotch for all seasons, there is plenty of flavor layered beneath the peat, with fruit and leather and spice coming out, practically yelling at you across the room the second you open the bottle. Bowmore might be the certified pre-owned BMW, but Laphroaig is the secondhand Honda you picked up at the police auction and you can't be sure something didn't happen in the rear seat. But I know which I'd rather drive, and have more fun doing it.
