Tasting Notes

The Calvados of the Huard family have long been a coveted range for devotees of this category. For over five generations the family has lived on the small plot of 15 hectares with 1,600 trees planted with over 30 varieties of apples. Jean-Francois Guillouet-Huard has taken over from his grandfather Michel since 2000 and has begun reintroducing select blends in small amounts to the United States. After a visit to the estate we hand-selected this 1999 vintage and had it bottled exclusively for us. A rich and decadent style that drinks like a Calvados twice its age, the notes include brown butter, buckwheat honey, sweet caramel, lavender, blood orange, Christmas spices, nougat, chimney smoke, and more. Incredible.

Staff Pick Notes

I often have a hard time convincing people to try Calvados. I’ll go on a monologue about aromas, flavors, and the maker, but most of the time it's not enough. This is a great Calvados to get you hooked on the category. An autumnal bouquet of baked apples, cinnamon, and burnt sugar. The palate is fresh with a texture akin to cider. Hazelnut, molasses, nougat, and cinnamon are the primary flavors but you’ll get more the longer it sits in the glass. There isn’t a marketing firm somewhere with a team of Mad Men thinking up ways to cram Calvados down your throat. There’s just people like me, writing to you here, earnestly saying, “Please try this.”
