Tasting Notes

Dating back to 1270, this estate—located in the heart of the Bas Armagnac—remains relatively unknown in the States. With a team dedicated to preserving the traditions of the region—including the use of the region's oldest still dating back to 1804 as well as oak casks made from trees grown on the estate—the spirits of D'Ognoas offer some of the best value in the category. We hand selected this 20 year old 1995 vintage from a single cask holding a blend of 60% Ugni Blanc, 30% Baco, and 10% Folle Blanche. Notes include clover honey, almond paste, brown sugar, toasted sesame, white pepper, dates, oak spices, and more. An excellent value for a brandy this old, this spirit was bottled exclusively for us at Astor Wines in a very limited quantity.

Staff Pick Notes

I'm of two minds on writing this staff pick. On the one hand I want to climb the nearest mountaintop and let everyone know how great this is. On the other, I want to keep it a secret, put up a cordon and say "nothin to see here folks." I don't want prices to go berserk or bottles to suddenly become scarce like, ahem, some other spirits we know. So for now, let's just keep this between us. Dom. d'Ognoas is one of the oldest, most prestigious estates in the region and their whole lineup is top notch. This 1995 bottling spent 2 decades in barrel (hand-selected by Astor) and is exquisitely smooth with light brown sugar, toffee, dried fruits and vanilla. It's the perfect way to cap off a holiday dinner, sipped by the fire, with family and friends.
