Clendenen Family Vineyards, Nebbiolo "Bricco Buon Natale" - 2019

Item # 20980 750mL

When you taste this exceedingly pretty Nebbiolo, you'll be surprised to find that it comes from California. From its rosy, earthy perfume to its beautifully extracted tannins, the wine reminds us of a Piedmontese Nebbiolo. The wine sees 48 months in barrel, so be prepared for hints of vanilla as well.

Staff Pick Notes

Jim Clendenen loved Italy and Italian wine, so, in 1994, Nebbiolo clones were planted in the Bien Nacido vineyards for the Clendenen family. Today we have before us the fifth release of the Bricco Nebbiolo, and it shows the maturity of the vines with ever increasing depth and power. Inspired by, but certainly not an imitation of the great styles of piedmont, the typical roses and tar we expect from the varietal are here but elevated into something exceptional and truly Californian in the best possible way. Four years in oak barrels gives this wine balance, elegance, and charm. Aromas of rose-hip, lavender, and cured meats greet us. On the palate, perfectly balanced acid and mellow tannins unveil dried cherries, strawberry licorice, and pomegranate on a high definition finish. Paired with a lunch of Tortellini in Brodo with mini-meatballs.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.
