Valtellina Superiore, Grumello, Rocca de Piro, Ar Pe Pe - 2015

Item # 27079 750mL

Complexity and subtlety are the hallmarks of this elegant Nebbiolo. From vines around the Grumello de Piro Castle, this is an intense wine. Notes of wild raspberry and garden rosebuds open to tobacco leaf and old leather. Tannins and acidtiy are tenacious. Ar Pe Pe's Grumello is slowly achieving cult status, it's best to collect multiple bottles to both drink now and cellar.

Staff Pick Notes

When I had the pleasure of meeting with Isabella Pelizzatti, 4th generation of the winemaking family behind Ar Pe Pe, I was struck by the simultaneous power and beauty of the Nebbiolo in my glass. The vineyard is situated high in the Alps just south of the Italian-Swiss border where elevations reach as high as 400 meters. Unlike the famous Barolo region, here soil is loose and sandy, but the mineral content remains outstanding. This is largely the reason that Valetlina Nebbiolo remains fresher and more nimble with fruit as it matures. Every process in the vineyard and cellar is done by hand before maturation takes place in large, 55 hectaliter oak barrels. These properties bring to the bottle a wine that can open up within elegance and intrigue today, or age your family cellar for decades to come.

With these wines, the mountain-grown Nebbiolo grapes are dried for several months in the Amarone style, yielding reds of extraordinary depth and very pronounced aromas of red flowers and crystallized red fruit.
