This cuvée in the spirit of 2016’s Belle Compagnie Meridionale: Clairette from the Drôme (N.Rhône); Chardonnay from the Ardèche (N. Rhône); Pinot Blanc & “a little” Riesling from Alsace; Sauvignon Gris & Chard from Brionnais (near the Mâconnais); Aligoté from De Moor vines. Each variety was vinified and barrel-aged separately, the Aligoté being the only one in tank instead.

Clairette

Clairette is a term that is applied to several white varieties in southern France: "Clairette Ronde" refers to Ugni Blanc; there is also a pink-skinned variety called Clairette Rose. The real "Clairette Blanche," however, is a touchy grape that is added to many blends in the southern Rhône, Provence, and Languedoc. It is prized in such blends for its bright acidity and its aromatic properties.

Riesling

Though the trend is now in the other direction, for many years Riesling was known for producing wines with little alcohol and some residual sugar - too sweet for many modern wine drinkers. Aligoté

The "other" white grape of Burgundy, Aligoté plays a struggling second fiddle to the regal white grape of the region, Chardonnay. Older Aligoté vines have been known to produce wines of high quality, displaying lovely citrusy and at times nutty characteristics - but even so, the remaining plantings of the grape are fast being uprooted to make even more space for the cultivation of Chardonnay.
