Blanc Etc., Vin de France, Didier Dagueneau - 2019

Item # 34179 750mL

Simply the best Pouilly-Fumé produced. This is the top cuvée from legendary grower Didier Dagueneau. Fantastic concentration and complexity due to Dagueneau's meticulous sorting of grapes for ultimate ripeness. The wine is known for its unique ability to express the inherent smokiness of the flint or "Silex" soil of Pouilly-Fumé. Dagueneau is a rebel who is renowned for his desire to adhere to the traditional methods of the region and to make his wines as expressive of terroir as they can be. Dagueneau began making wine in 1982 but his wines are thought to have come into their own a few years later when he began aging in old oak barrels. He is opposed to malolactic fermentation in all vintages.

He left his pastoral home town at a young age to become a motorcycle side car racer on the international circuit between 1978 and 1982. He, as well, competed as a dog sled racer during the winter months. Didier, upon...

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Sauvignon Blanc

Few varietals have spawned as bizarre a list of descriptors as Sauvignon Blanc. Believe it or not, “cat pee” is in fact a complimentary tasting note, associated with some of the best bottlings. (It’s a somewhat odd way of pointing out herbaceousness in the wine.) Cat pee aside, Sauvignon Blanc (sometimes called "Fumé Blanc" in California) is a bit of a chameleon in terms of style, and quite utterly at the whim of the winemaker. Some are fermented in barrel, others in stainless steel. Some...
