Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "Les Gras Moutons", Pepière - 2020

Item # 38553 750mL

Made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape and first bottled in 2007. Les Gras Moutons, the fat sheep, is a lieu-dit made up of 2 vineyard parcels in Monnières-Saint Fiacre. The soil features gneiss--a compressed form of granite that has a very different impact than the granites found in other Pépière sites--as well as amphibolite rocks scattered throughout. The fruit is pressed and then fermented in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts; the wine is aged on its lees in large vats--9 months in the case of Gras Moutons-- until bottling without fining or filtering.

Staff Pick Notes

Domaine de la Pepière is well known for reflecting the land, the terroir, in each of their wines. "Les Gras Moutons" is a parcel acquired in 2006, which I like to say shows the classic Muscadet terroir expression. So what soil is the "Les Gras Moutons"? The composition is mostly Gneiss with clay and amphibolite stones. The site is located on top of a hill, south facing towards the Maine river. The wine is aged for 8 months on his lees with no fining or filtration. Overall very elegant with herbal, floral and citrus notes, well balanced with good acidity and mineral components unique to the Muscadet region. Good to know that this type of Muscadet can be aged and become even more yummy!

Glossary

Melon de Bourgogne

Muscadet

The coolest (temperature-wise) of the Loire Valley appellations, this region is most famous for its bracingly dry, seafood-friendly whites. Made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape (virtually unheard of in the rest of the world), these refreshing wines are idyllic partners for oysters or mussels.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
