Mexico is known as the land of Mezcal and Tequila but there are pockets of the country across its vastly diverse micro-climates where the conditions for top quality sugarcane are ideal. And here you will find small artisanal producers that evoke the best of the mezcal world, making exciting, complex, natural rums known as Charanda. Notes here are similar to those of the great Clairins of Haiti or the regal agricoles of the French Caribbean with a mix of savory and hints of sweet including notes of Lime Basil, green peppercorns, white tea, preserved lemon and mulberries.

Think all un-aged "rums" are alike? First of all this is actually Charanda, a spirit made in Michoacán, Mexico from sugarcane juice. Much like wine classifications it has protected status, which means it can only be made in this part of the country from specific types of sugarcane and must follow specific production guidelines. Secondly, the double distillation of the spirit results in an exuberant nose that reminds me of some darker, black strap style rums. Third, the fruity flavors and soft, sugary nuances linger on the palate quite unexepectedly for a young spirit. This Charanda will be a standout in cocktails, but don't shy away from drinking it neat, just like the locals do. All in all it's a delicious surprise waiting to be discovered by you.
