Crozes-Hermitage "Equinoxe", Dom. Equis - 2021

Item # 43583 750mL

The appellation of Crozes-Hermitage is located in the north of the Rhône Valley. This comes from Maxime Graillot, the eldest son of Alain Graillot, who in the early 2000s branched off on his own after working wtih his father since his youth. Comparatively, Maxime's wines are exhuberant with more fruit appeal. Thirty percent of the fruit is pressed whole cluster. The grapes were fermented with native yeasts and aged in large, 40 hl wood casks.

Staff Pick Notes

This bottle of Crozes-Hermitage "Equinoxe", Dom. Equis is a true expression of a Rhone Syrah with a story behind it. Maxime, son of the famous winemaker Alain Graillot, set out to make a name for himself. And boy did he. He knew where the best land in the Rhône was and purchased parcels adjacent to those of Domaine Alain Graillot, alongside parcels in the heart of the original Saint-Joseph and Cornas. He converted the previously conventionally farmed vineyards to organic, making sure soils were constantly ploughed (allowing the roots to dig deep into the gravel) and banning the use of herbicides. The results were perfect. This dark, plummy, rich, leathery, delicious bottle of red will nicely pair with anything off a wood-burning grill or stove, especially pizza.

Rhône

Prestige in the north, value in the south: that’s the quick version of the Rhône story. Southern village appellations produce a dizzying stylistic range of delicious wines, while the prices for northern “trophy” bottles can be dizzyingly high. If you like smoky, leathery, earthy, macho red wines, however, the wines of the northern Rhône are well worth it. Prestigious northern Rhône appellations include Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and St.-Joseph. In the southern Rhône, look to the village...

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...
