Les Lunes Wines, "Venturi Vineyard", Mendocino Zinfandel - 2016

Item # 45473 750mL

A California Zinfandel that is unlike its siblings, this light-bodied dry red stands out in a crowd. Far from the dark and jammy aromas typical of the style, this is lithe and aromatic, light in color and body, and with restrained tannic structure. The dark fruit is there, but it is savory, complex, and extremely food-friendly. Pair with carnitas tacos.

Staff Pick Notes

Venturi vineyards makes a diverse array of wines, but I consider this Zinfandel the most interesting. Mendocino is located in Northern California where the weather is not as hot. This, in addition to the typical qualities of Zinfandel, results in a wine with a good amount of acidity and freshness. Viticulture in Mendocino County dates back to the mid 1800s. Nowadays, this area is known especially for its organic and biodynamic wines and this one is no exception. Lively on the palate, with flavors of strawberry and cranberry, a good minerality, and forest floor notes. It's easy drinking, fun, and elegant!

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is widely thought of as “America’s grape,” but in fact the variety is of Croatian origin, and is genetically extremely similar to Italian Primitivo, which thrives in the warmest parts of southern Italy. Like Primitivo, Zinfandel requires warm but not hot growing conditions, as its skins are relatively thin: this can cause its berries to shrivel into raisins if left on the vine a little too long. Dry and well-drained terroirs are also preferable for Zinfandel, as its bunches are...
