Staff Pick Notes

Ya gotta love Alsace. While other regions’ Grand Crus will set you back hundreds of dollars, Alsace’s Grand Cru wines are often under $50. Take this awesome Riesling by Domaine Rietsch, vinified from fruit of the Zotzenberg Grand Cru vineyard. The vineyard rests on a slope at 1000 ft elevation, faces southeast (receiving maximum sun), and boasts soils of marl and limestone (which retains moisture in Alsace’s dry climate). Domaine Rietsch gives us Riesling that is a joy to drink. It shows a natty edge of sherry, nuts, aged vinegar and spiced baked apples. It is opulent and lush on the palate with a powerful entry and a long finish. Enjoy with kimchi fried rice with smoked brisket (which is what I did).

They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
