Staff Pick Notes

Freisa- A widely forgotten about Piedmontese grape variety has a very long history in Italy and dates all the way back to the 1500's. Additionally, recent genetic studies show that Freisa is likely to be the parent variety to Nebbiolo. I adore this grape variety due to its "all over the place" complexity. It can range from having light slightly sweet notes of strawberries, to brambly bitter dark fruited notes. This specific example is the latter. Medium bodied exhibiting notes of under-ripe blackberries as well as lovely acidity and a slight tannic edge. This wine is drinking gorgeously now but will certainly shine given a couple of years of bottle age. Drink with a braised short rib ragu, or a simple tomato sauce with fresh pasta at the height of summer.
