Wimmer-Czerny

Wagram, Austria

Fels am Wagram, Wagram, Austria The members of the Czerny family dedicate themselves with love to wine and to nature. They have been working their land, situated about 50 miles west of Vienna on the Danube River, for over 250 years. The hilly, austere region is distinctive because of its deep soils composed of loess - a soft, friable type of soil capable of bringing stunning levels of minerality to wines. Hans Czerny, who took over from his father Johann in 1987, is extremely committed to practicing minimal intervention in the vineyards and in the cellar. He and his family care deeply for the flora and fauna of their region. Hans considers himself a minimalist; he finds it easy to conform to the Biodynamic regimen, a process that encourages growth of all plant and animal life. The idea is that diversity in the vineyards produces wines of better quality. The Czernys first “Certified Organic” harvest was 2003, with the Demeter biodynamic certification coming a few years later. In the cellar, his minimalism continues. No additives are ever used, only natural yeasts are employed, filtering is kept to a minimum, and the wines are left in contact with the lees for long periods in order to maintain the identity and the personality of the wines. Furthermore, Hans’s dedication to his land and vineyards is reflected in his old-vine Grüner Veltiner, Riesling, Traminer, and St. Laurent, which all fully express the potential of the Wagram and of the grape varieties.
