Tasting Notes

Old Chenin is unique in every way. This is golden in color with crystailine mineral filling a decadently full body. There is richness, dried plums, quince and a whisper of saffron beneath petrol and fresh mushrooms. Wild, delicious, dry. Ready-to-drink now, but this Grand Cru Chenin will stand up to some time in cellar, if you're not in a rush.

Staff Pick Notes

Wine can be an exercise of patience, biding your time for fruitful, immersive experiences that gloss over the senses. This library release Chenin Blanc from Domaine Aux Moines shows an immaculateness at this age that few wines can match. Founded in 1981 (though plantings seem to date farther back than that), Monique and Tessa Laroche head up this 10 Ha property that sits next to the famed Coulee de Serrant. Aged 65-75% in stainless steel and the rest in wood, the aromas are full of honey, beeswax, pineapple, citrus blossom, and vanilla bean. The palate unfurls like satin with flavors of salted butter, ginger, toasted sour dough, hazelnut, chamomile and striking minerality. This golden beauty brings forth a cadence that demands your utmost attention and opens up to its fullest after decanting for two hours; trust me, it’s worth the wait.

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly...
