Staff Pick Notes

Furmint is best known for it's prominent role in sweet Tokaji wines (made from late harvest botrytis grapes), but riper grapes are made into refreshing dry whites throughout the eastern side of central Europe. Kobal Family's Furmint ('Šipon' in Slovene) comes from cool climate vineyards of Haloze in the Štajerska region (Styria, near the Austrian region of the same name). Vines averaging 35 years are planted in marl rich soil. Cold maceration for 24 hours plus gives the wine a pleasant crisp quality, which is accentuated with notes of fresh apples and stone fruits on the palette. A full texture and a hint of spices round out the finish. Serve chilled on ice with seasonal charcuterie and hard cheeses. An excellent bottle to try if you're a fan of aromatic whites such as Riesling or Chenin Blanc.
