Intensely aromatic, this amaro from Capelletti infuses herbs, macerated flowers, and roots into wine and adds a touch of sweetness from tree sap. The bitterness and complex flavors linger long after your first sip. Drink after a meal.
This is the most bitter amaro we have on the shelf. It's the most bitter anything. It's probably more bitter than doing a shot of Angostura bitters straight out of the bottle. Some people will bounce immediately after reading that, but some crazy amaroheads (like me) might have found a grail bottle in this unique vino amaro from Cappelletti. The initial bitterness is certainly bracing, almost an assault on your palate, but the complexity of flavors that follows afterward is peerless. The base is actually a dry Marsala, bringing nutty, oxidized notes and dried fruit to balance out botanicals like burdock, aloe, gentian, buckthorn, and dandelion, plus something unnameable that I can describe as green pine dragged over glowing coals. The only sweetener is a bit of tree sap from Sicily. But it settles me down like nothing else.
