Tasting Notes

The Voyer family are widely regarded as one of France's greatest distillers but their fame and reputation has remained largely confined to their home country as their expertise has been in non-stop demand by the biggest brands in the category while the best restaurants in and shops in Paris have sought out the family's bottlings directly. Based in Grande Champagne, this VSOP comes directly from the estate's cellars and gives you a glimpse of the extraordinary potential of this domaine. A blend with an average age of ten years, more than double the requirement for VSOP, distilled exclusively from grapes grown by the Voyer's on their family's vineyards in Chaucet the Cognac hits several major flavor categories with flavors of fruit, earth, flowers and spice with notes of apricot, jasmine, wildflower honey, white tea, fresh tobacco and nutmeg.

Staff Pick Notes

Cognac has dominated the brandy scene in the United States for quite some time. Though I fear the brands that have made the category popular (I won’t name names) have mislead the average drinker as to what great Cognac is. Marzipan, cubed pineapple, shaved coconut, and waxy nuts? Yes, this is Cognac. Caramel, wood smoke, and mouthwatering spices? Yes, this is Cognac. Don’t get bogged down in the race for “Smoothness.” Drink something because it’s expressive and satisfying, and let the lackluster brands and lacquered booze go wanting.
