Few companies in the world of drinks push the envelope at the pace that Maison Ferrand does. When you take into account the degree of innovation each new release takes and then think about how many categories they are constantly doing this in - simultaneously - it only begins to put into perspective how impressive these achievements are. This third release of Renegade casks is a Grande Champagne Cognac distilled in 2011 that was set aside and aged for a decade in traditional Cognac Casks with a special finish is ex-rum casks that previously held 1996 vintage Lond Pond Rum. This is the future of Cognac in every sip. As usual Ferrand is years ahead of the rest.

This bottle is on the shelf with other Cognacs, but you’ll notice the word ‘Cognac’ does not appear on it. That’s because while there was a time at the turn of the 20th century that producers used rum barrels to finish their Cognacs, surprisingly it is not included in the most recent AC regulations. However, ask any old timer blenders and they’ll tell you, there is great potential for developing “haut goût” through the use of rum casks, and one sip of this and you’ll realize they were, and are once again, truly onto something. Aromas of butter roasted pear, cinnamon raisin bagel, and chocolate orange leap out of the snifter. A gorgeous palate of nutmeg, marzipan, and tropical fruits leads to a warm and friendly finish that goes for miles. A true renegade of a brandy, with one foot in the past, and one firmly planted in the future.
