In the mid-nineteenth century Italicus was known as the "drink of kings." This anticipated revival is based on the 1850s recipe. A core of Italian bergamot is complemented by a variety of hand-selected Italian botanicals. Abundant notes of tonic, herbs, and bright citrus make this all-purpose liqueur shine in your long drinks and aperitifs.
There are a lot of good reasons to keep a bottle of Italicus on your bar. You can swap it for pretty much any citrus liqueur and instantly elevate a classic cocktail like a Sidecar, Gin Sour or Mezcal Margarita. It has a complex, aromatic, lightly bitter edge from rose and bergamot. It makes a damn good spritz just topping off a glass of sparkling wine (or an IPA!). But what made me a convert was making a white Negroni. I went equal parts NYDC Dorothy Parker gin (for its more floral botanicals), C. Comoz blanc vermouth, and Italicus, hit it with a dash of Yuzu bitters, and sat on my stoop on a 95° day sipping it over an ice cube the size of my fist. There wasn't a thing missing in the world.
