The Astor Wines & Spirits Glossary

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Famous for its fascinating and unusual white wines, this region is home to many avant-garde winemakers (such as Gravner and Vie di Romans) who have expanded their repertoire of winemaking styles to include both the most modern, stainless-steel and barrique-influenced wines, to über-traditional wines with long maceration periods, fermented in clay amphorae. The grape that benefits most from the latter of these unusual and ancient techniques is the white varietal, Ribola Gialla, which yields opulent and richly layered white wines. These wines are savory (as opposed to fruity) and are superb matches for the seafood dishes common to the Adriatic Coast of Friuli. In contrast to the whites, Friuli’s catalogue of unique reds from indigenous varieties such as Refosco, Schioppettino, and Tazzelenghe are bright, fresh, and berry-scented - far more in keeping with the Northern Italian paradigm of flavors and aromas.
